Bullying isn’t just about a victim and an attacker. When someone is bullied, there are onlookers. And far too often, those onlookers don’t do anything to stop the bullying. It’s easy enough to say, “I wasn’t the one hurting him” or “I don’t want to be his next target.” But that’s not the right thing to do. Bullying is a contagion, and every onlooker who does nothing is at risk of becoming infected- of becoming either the bully or the victim. Neither fate is a good one.
This design by Jordan Bouma reminds us of the grave nature of bullying. It’s not something to be taken lightly, and is certainly not something to be ignored. It also reminds us that the bystanders who do nothing are risking themselves.
