We all have those moments when the alarm goes off or our eyes open in the morning and we just don’t want to move. You want to allow your bed to claim you for the whole day and just sink into a cycle of binging on Netflix and only emerging for sustenance and the odd bathroom break.
But, sometimes it’s not possible to stop your world for the day and take a time out. So, what can you do to get your drive back to turn things around and have a productive day? Here are 5 tips that can give you the energy that you need to get up and get going.
Dream of the day when your dreams come true.
Visualization is one of the greatest tools in your mental arsenal when it comes to trying to get yourself motivated. Whether you’re trying to drag your lazy butt to the gym or don’t want to slug through a day of boring meetings, think about what you’re doing it all for. Imagine how much happier you’re going to be when you are healthier, more financially secure, or in that job that you can pour your passion into on a daily basis.
Take five minutes between hits of the snooze button in the morning and think of yourself in 5 or 10 years. You could be on an amazing vacation on the other side of the world, having fun with the family on the weekend, or could be at the top of your field and respected by people that you currently admire. Remind yourself that you’re not going to get there unless you get out of that bed!
One of the biggest causes of a loss in motivation is boredom. No one wants to feel like their stuck in the same loop every day with nothing new or exciting to look forward to. Remember that there is always time to try something new and find a reason to smile in any given day.
Always have something exciting to do that day.
But, you can’t wait for someone else to present you with a new opportunity.
Schedule something that you can look forward to every day. This might be partaking in a favorite hobby after work or even cooking yourself an amazing dinner. You could set up a morning coffee date with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while and want to catch up with. Or, you could plan to see that new blockbuster with your honey. Make sure the best part of your day doesn’t happen when you’re sleeping.
Get up and move.
Exercise can feel like it’s going to be torture when you’re feeling sluggish. But, this can be the time when it can help you the most to lift your spirits and reclaim that energy that has left you. Remember that you don’t need to commit to an hour of sweating away on the treadmill to benefit from the effects of exercise. Getting out of bed or your desk chair and just stretching for a few minutes can start the blood flowing in your body. And this might just give you that little jolt that you need to get going.
Make tasks as enjoyable as possible.
If you don’t want to start your day because you know that you have to do something that you don’t enjoy, do what you can to make that activity more fun. You could play your favorite tunes and turn house cleaning into a dance party. Or, you give yourself a goal of holding your breath for a full minute during your boring morning meeting. If it takes doing something silly to get you through it with a smile on your face, do it! Just make sure your boss remains none the wiser.
Call in reinforcements.
If you’re having trouble staying on task and getting things done in your life, it’s likely that you have someone close to you that is going through the same problem. If you have a bunch of errands to run, call a friend and turn it into a two-person affair. If you are skipping too many days at the gym, get a buddy to go with you and keep you on track. Suffering through all of the boring or difficult things on your to-do list with someone you love can turn a terrible day into an amazing one!
Remember that you are the one who determines what sort of attitude you have throughout your life. You can choose to sink into those sheets and say goodbye to productivity for the day or can end the day full of energy and ready to do it all again tomorrow. Get motivated and you never know what you might be able to accomplish!
