Ask someone what their New Year’s Resolutions are, and chances are, you’ll get one of a few answers: weight loss, better finances, to live a happier life. But you don’t have to stick to the same old resolution. To help you kick off the New Year on the right foot, try something different. Make a resolution that will change the world. Here are a few that you can try:
How often have you thought about volunteering at a homeless shelter, or reading to kids at the library? Now is the time to act on those thoughts. Whether you volunteer your time online or help out in person, pick a cause that you care about and join them in their efforts.
It sounds simple, right? It is. Smiling can make you and the people around you happier. If someone is having a bad day, is stuck in a rough patch, or is simply just grumpy, a smile can make their problems go away for a moment. So the next time you see someone who looks unhappy, spread a little cheer with a simple smile.
You’ve probably done a fair share of good deeds in your life. But this year, make a resolution to help people out more often. It might be something as simple as helping your neighbor bring her groceries in the house or sending a friend flowers, or something as extreme as helping your cousin pay for his hospital bill. Make a conscious effort to help people out as often as you can.
4. Join in on at least one march or boycott
If you disagree with something, don’t suffer in silence. Stand up for what you believe in and participate in a march or boycott. Coming together to change the world is something that everyone should experience at least once in their life. And although some people underestimate the power of public displays, they can actually be very powerful events that promote change.
5. Stay educated on social issues
You can’t be an advocate for an issue unless you know what’s going on. This year, make a resolution to stay up-to-date on the issues you care about. Check out some e-books on the topic, subscribe to a good blog about it, or listen to a podcast devoted to it.
The start of a new year is the perfect time to make some positive changes in your life. Let 2017 be the year you change the world.

One of my resolutions this year is to be more positive – much like item #2 on your list! I think it can change the world: if I’m more positive, it can have an impact on those around me & maybe their lives will be more positive, too.
I especially like #2 Smile More. A smile can really brighten someone else’s day. And you physically feel better when you smile.
